Project implementation
West Nile Nutrition and Livelihood Improvement (NILE) Project (2023-2026)

NILE_Map.png

Northern Uganda has accepted more than 1.4 million refugees, including from various participating communities, due to the open door policy for refugees. The target area, Adjumani refugee settlement and its host communities, is extremely poor due to food shortages (especially food rich in iron and vitamins), fragile livelihoods (lack of income sources and deteriorating living conditions), and lack of knowledge and experience on nutrition and childcare. This has resulted in poor nutritional status of children and adolescent women, and measures are required. Therefore, NAM is implementing a three-year project in the target area (refugee settlements and host communities in Ayilo-1 & 2, Adjumani refugee camp, Adjumani District, West Nile State) to sustainably improve the nutritional status and livelihoods of children under five, pregnant and lactating women, and adolescent women in the target area (refugee settlements and host communities in Aylio 1 and 2, Adjumani District, West Nile Region).

Project Overview :
1. Care Group (CG) activities : To disseminate knowledge about healthy eating and childcare for pregnant and lactating women, and adolescent women, we establish an implementation system, form groups, provide nutrition training to CG promoters, conduct group nutrition education activities, link and referral to health and nutrition services, visit to mothers' households, and hold monthly meetings by volunteers.
2. Social Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) strategy activities : Identify obstacles to behavior change through barrier analysis and situation surveys, and use this as a basis to develop SBCC strategies. Create communication materials, and engage in school health and nutrition communication activities.
3. Improve household livelihoods and employment opportunities: Formation of self-help groups for mothers, identification of livelihood means through market research, accounting training for savings activities, etc. In the future, skills training and business start-up support will be provided.
4. Improve nutritional value, especially iron-rich food production : Promote home gardening to cultivate vegetables, fruits, beans, and potatoes. Establish "Community Demonstration Farms" and "Nutritional Food Demonstrations" in communities and schools.
5. Improved coordination capacity of the District Nutrition Coordination Committee: Sharing experiences in the Coordination Committee, implementing supportive supervision, and conducting monitoring and evaluation training.
