Action Network Against Malnutrition

Research survey (Father KAP survey)

In 2018, NAM conducted a Barrier Analysis (BA) in two locations in the Borno region of northern Nigeria to find out why mothers do not change their behavior. The results of the BA showed that mothers are unable to put their knowledge into action due to a lack of support from fathers, mothers' stress, and various other factors. Therefore, this time we conducted a survey on fathers' nutritional knowledge, awareness, and habits (KAP), and the survey resulted in a summary of recommendations for how to approach fathers.

The KAP survey is a survey that collects information on the knowledge (K), attitude (A), and behavior (P) of people involved in nutrition, food, hygiene, health, etc., with the aim of designing and evaluating behavior change interventions for improving nutrition based on the results. This time, we aimed to investigate fathers' knowledge level regarding appropriate infant and young child feeding practices (IYCF), the presence and degree of specific support, and their perception of their role, and to propose simple, practical, and executable activities for fathers to be more proactive in providing support.

The survey results showed that fathers have some basic knowledge about IYCF, but it is not sufficient, and that even if they have knowledge, the percentage of fathers who provide specific support is low. On the other hand, it was also found that fathers who have more knowledge about breastfeeding are more likely to continue breastfeeding for a long time. Based on the survey results, it is suggested that messages targeted at father groups be created and disseminated in the future.
